Counselling for neurodistinct individuals

With my background as a public school teacher and behaviour interventionist, I bring more than a decade of experience working with neurodistinct individuals, including those with ADHD, autism, and learning disabilities. I have supported clients across a wide age range, from young children as early as three years old to adults in their 50s.

Counselling for individuals

Individual counselling offers a space to better understand how your mind works, how your nervous system responds, and how your experiences have shaped the way you relate to yourself and the world.

For neurodivergent individuals, therapy involves untangling years of misunderstanding, masking, or being told that something is “wrong” rather than different. This can include experiences of burnout, chronic overwhelm, difficulty with focus or transitions, sensory sensitivities, or feeling out of step with expectations at work, school, or in relationships.

This includes:

  • understanding how your specific neurotype shapes attention, emotion, and behaviour

  • identifying patterns of masking and the impact this has had on your energy and sense of self

  • working with emotional regulation in a way that fits your nervous system, rather than against it

  • exploring burnout, shutdown, or cycles of overexertion and recovery

  • building strategies that are practical, sustainable, and adapted to your life

Therapy is about developing a clearer understanding of yourself and finding ways of living that reduce strain while supporting stability, agency, and self-trust.

Counselling for couples

When one or both partners are neurodivergent, relationship challenges are often less about intent and more about differences in processing, communication, and regulation.

Couples can find themselves caught in repeating patterns where one person feels overwhelmed or shut down, while the other feels unheard, disconnected, or unsure how to reach them. These patterns can escalate quickly, especially when both partners are trying to cope with stress in different ways.

In couples counselling, we focus on making these patterns visible and understandable rather than assigning blame.

This includes:

  • understanding differences in communication styles, timing, and emotional processing

  • working with sensory needs, overstimulation, and recovery time

  • addressing cycles of pursuit and withdrawal or escalation and shutdown

  • supporting clearer expression of needs, boundaries, and expectations

  • building ways of reconnecting that feel manageable for both partners

The goal is not to make both people operate the same way, but to create a relationship structure where differences are understood and can be worked with more effectively.
